Re: A suggestion
Yes, I agree with that idea.
I mean, not only may people want to remain anonymous, but they might be uncomfortable with photographs, for whatever reason.
I have no idea what this 'fakebusters' thing is, but it sounds horrid and I don't want IAR subjected to anything like that.
But, as Marlee said, IAR is a small - tiny - community. We know what's going on; often way more than most people would assume. We don't use only IPs to detect dups, we all discuss it as a group and go over the evidence we have.
Of course we can make mistakes - we're humans, too. But as of yet we haven't been offered sufficient proof to suggest anything contrary to our theories.

Re: A suggestion
^Yeah, I'm not sure I'd stay on IAR if photos/salutes was something you had to do.
And it was horrid, Mikey.
Basically, a girl made this journal where people were meant to post links to profiles they thought were fake, and then her and two other girls (fakebusters) would report them to Dujo.
Except they didn't--instead, they started harrassing every user they were linked to to post proof pictures/salutes of themselves by a certain time, or they'd be banned.
If they refused, the comments got even more insulting--for one girl, her first six comments upon joining mibba were along the lines of "pathetic fake" or "bitch."
Then other people started reassuring these users they didn't need to post salutes, so the fake-busters started insulting those users as well. Admin caught wind of it soon enough and bans ensued.
Not that I'd think anyone on IAR would do that, but...yeah. Was quite quite horrible.

Dear god that's awful. I hope the ones getting banned were those girls, not the others.
No. Nothing like that will be happening here.
It's ridiculous to force someone to post a picture. Some people might be etremely uncomfortable with their appearance, some might not have access to a camera, some might have religious or moral obligations against photography - and even without those factors it's not a nice thing to do.
All we want is proof that there IS more than one person behind a multitude of accounts, and that could be something as easy as regular posting from their own IP addresses, not just the shared one.

Re: A suggestion
To be fair, a few of the people they were harassing did turn out to be fakes. One was the dup account of another fake-buster made just to prove a point. But either way, no-one deserves that kind of abuse. A ban's fair enough, reporting them's fair enough-calling them a bitch/other tasteful words and demanding photos from them is just four steps too far.
But yeah, the ringleader was banned-as well as the five or so accounts she made later on, the other was banned (she was on her second account at the time, ironically enough). The third's still on mibba, but is now reporting fakes through the proper channels.
Ironic that almost all of them were breaking major rules to try and preserve rules.
I agree, it's not a nice thing to do, for so many reasons.
And I wasn't expecting you to adopt a crazy fakebusting regime, I just felt like storytelling as it's relevant to the whole salutes thing.
You have brains and admin-ness, they had an idea executed in the most horrible way

Re: A suggestion
I got "busted" one time.
The chick said Dujo had me under "investigation".
She left a lot of asshole-ish comments so I told her that I knew otherwise and pretty much told her off.
In a rather rude way. She never commented me again.
[/spamish]
Maybe if someone is accused of being a fake, they could have a sort of trial?
Like, present all the evidence they have proving that they're not fake and the admins show the user the proof they have that makes them thing the use is fake.
And come to a ruling?
I'm 99% sure something like that already goes on, so I'm probably being redundant.
